The three day event, which began Friday with a casino night, is an annual fundraiser. The organization was selling T shirts and hats, and each angler paid $60 to enter the fishing tournament.
"They help me with gas," she said. "This organization helps a lot of women really in need."
In spite of her hardships, she was all smiles and laughter Saturday afternoon, as were so many others.
Monica Buitureira had caught a massive redfish that measured 24.38 inches and weighed 5.14 pounds. It had put up quite a fight. She'd caught another redfish that was over the limit of 28 inches and therefore couldn't be weighed. She planned to have it mounted.
They also played a few of their own original tunes.
The Durivages of Harlingen were two of 69 anglers participating in the event, said Cheryl Hill, president of South Padre Island Walk for Women.
The Durivage's prophecy proved correct. Charlotte Durivage took third place for her 5 1/2 pound trout, and Michael Durivage took first. They both said the win felt "awesome."
"I've been battling stage four breast cancer for seven years," she said. "I do chemotherapy."
He and his wife, Charlotte, both had large speckled trout and believed they had a pretty good chance of winning trophies for their catches.
A festive energy filled the open air restaurant of Louie's Backyard, enhanced by a brisk wind. The Seagles performed Credence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary," Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" and The Eagles' "Hotel California."
